History of Blue Mountain Hospital
Advancing Healthcare Services in Blanding
What many believed would never happen, and still more said would never
last, has now become an anchor in the healthcare delivery system of San
Juan County.
On July 4, 2009 Blue Mountain Hospital officials joined dignitaries from
Blanding City, Utah Navajo Health System, Inc., the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe
and San Juan County in an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the
hospital. A few days later Blue Mountain Hospital officially opened its
doors for business in Blanding. More than a century after Blanding was
first settled, the city finally had a hospital.
The opening of Blue Mountain Hospital was the culmination of hard work,
tireless effort and contributions from many individuals and organizations.
Of particular note were local businessmen Pete Black and Dale Slade, who
donated the land for the project; Utah Navajo Health System (UNHS), which
donated significant funds; and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, headquartered
in Towaoc, Colorado, which also donated funds to get the hospital off
the ground.
Where We Are Today
Blue Mountain Hospital, Inc. is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.
It is independent of the other mentioned entities, but both UNHS and the
Ute Tribe appoint board members to the hospital board of directors. In
less than a decade, the hospital has grown and expanded services to meet
the needs of the residents and visitors of San Juan County.
Blue Mountain Hospital provides
emergency services,
radiology,
lab,
general surgery,
labor & delivery, and
general hospital services. The hospital also operates an eight-chair
dialysis center, which is fairly unique for an independent rural hospital, and an in-house
pharmacy that features the latest technology in medication dispensing.
Vast Network of Medical Resources
The hospital works closely with UNHS, and its network of clinics in San
Juan County. The clinics refer patients to Blue Mountain Hospital for
hospital services, including surgery services. UNHS contracts with many
medical specialists, who see patients in the UNHS clinics on a regular
basis. These specialists also provide surgery services, as needed, at
Blue Mountain Hospital.
Blue Mountain Hospital has proven its value to the community, and is committed
to excellence in healthcare for the future. Our new motto is:
"Our family, caring for your family's good health."
